Uncovered piles of potentially volatile sand at 3rd and Evans CCSF Construction Site

Thursday 27 August 2020 11:50:48 AM

Location: Third St & Evans Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124, USA

Category: Toxic Substances

Description:

The intersection of 3rd Street and Evans has been documented by BAAQMD to be one of the cities most heavily polluted corridors with TACs. It is the entry way to India Basin, Pier 96 and the federal Superfund site at the Hunters Point Shipyard. I travel through this intersection on Muni several times a week. At the construction site for the new City College Southeast Campus are chronically uncovered "mountains" of gravel, sand, and dirt...often in multiple large piles. This chronic exposure from known TAC's in sand, gravel, and construction site dust aggravates the potential for air pollution and COVID-19 case rates in the 94124 zip code that hosts the second largest incidence of the pandemic. A Hunters Point resident with severe asthma was screened by HP Biomonitoring. Her urine toxicology screen detects multiple sand and soil elements in toxic concentrations.
